CAPTAIN’S REPORT
Hopefully the weather is turning for the better, so drier
conditions can only bring out the better golfer in all of us.
It should come as no surprise that due to the weather greens
fees are down, so a big push is needed to promote our club. Telling one person who isn’t a member that our
course still looks and plays superbly (how true!) will generate a chain effect
of that person telling another. We do
need them if we want our subs to stay the same next year.
You will have noticed that hollow tinning is underway, with
a few temporary greens in evidence. As you
will appreciate this is very necessary, as is the replacement of sand in some
of our bunkers. Your patience is
appreciated.
Arctic conditions greeted the many brave souls who played in
the first pairs competition. Hopefully
the Captain’s curse has been dispelled by virtue of yours truly & Craig
Weston managing a 2-under gross, 45 points!
Competition Day One enjoyed near-perfect conditions, but
surprisingly high scores were returned from the majority of the field. Congratulations to winner Billy Lunn in the gold,
and good luck to the play-off players in the silver and bronze divisions.
The Seniors continue to battle it out with Vic Quenell
winning their first competition, and Mick Lacey the second. Well done to you both.
A big thank you to the Kelso pairing of Alan Thorpe and
Keith Lewis who sadly lost to Surbiton, but represented the club with pride.
Our first mixed match win of the season came when we hosted
the inaugural match against Farleigh Court, narrowly taking the honours 4 and a
half, 3 and a half.
It is incumbent on us all in these difficult times to
support our club. Please pay attention
to the notices regarding forthcoming matches and social events. Match sign-up sheets are there for everyone,
not just the regulars (although their support is truly appreciated!). If your name is down, you will be considered,
no matter what your handicap.
The
up-coming Spanish night is being very well supported. Our hope is that this will be the first of
many such evenings. Your continuing
support is appreciated.
We have installed a completely new CCTV system in and around
the club, and already this has proved itself with the successful identification
of the car belonging to thieves who broke into 2 members’ vehicles; in one case
making off with a considerable haul of tools.
It must be reiterated that an upgrade was entirely necessary given the
increase in theft in the car park and trolley shed, and the increasing popularity
of outside functions at the club. (Please
be mindful that you are still responsible for your personal effects, and as per
previous notices, the club cannot be held responsible for them.) Throughout our lives we are all under
constant surveillance, like it or not. This
step is not an invasion of our privacy.
Your Captain Peter
